The Confederation of African Football(CAF) has postponed the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations(WAFCON) to July.
The development comes just 12 days before the scheduled kick-off in Morocco.
In a statement, CAF stated that the tournament had been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.
The tournament which was scheduled for March 17 to April 3, 2026, doubles as a qualifier for the 2027 women’s World Cup slated for Brazil.
Speculation about Morocco’s willingness to host the tournament mounted following chaotic scenes during the 2025 Men’s AFCON final which saw Senegal bagging the cup after beating hosts Morocco 1-0. At Stade Moulay Abdellah in Rabat.
Without indicating the host, the Caf statement said the decision to postpone the tournament was taken to ensure the success of WAFCON while preparations are underway to come up with the new host.
This is not the first WAFCON to face uncertainity . CAF had entirely cancelled the 2020 WAFCON due to the Covid-19 while the 2021 showpiece was rescheduled to early 2022 with the 2024 tournament only held in July, 2025.
