The operation, carried out in Sokoto State, was confirmed by the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) as coordinated with the Nigerian government. AFRICOM noted the strikes hit multiple militant positions and resulted in the deaths of several ISIS fighters, adding that it followed intelligence sharing and strategic cooperation between Washington and Abuja.
While Trump framed the intervention as a response to attacks against Christians, Nigerian officials stressed that violence in the region affects all communities and described the action as part of broader counter-terrorism cooperation. The operation marks a significant escalation of U.S. military involvement in West Africa’s fight against extremist groups as Nigeria battles both ISIS affiliates and other insurgent factions.
