How Ecobank Zambia Is Supporting Life Saving Surgery in Rural Zambia

Ecobank Zambia has been recognised by the Ministry of Health for supporting a major surgical outreach programme that expanded access to healthcare services in Zambia’s North Western Province.

The initiative, delivered in partnership with Upright Africa, took place between February and April 2026 at Solwezi General Hospital and surrounding clinics. More than 200 surgical procedures worth nearly K1 million were successfully carried out, helping reduce surgical backlogs and improve healthcare access for underserved communities.

Speaking during a handover meeting at the Ministry of Health Headquarters, Health Minister Hon. Alex Katakwe described the programme as a strong example of how public and private sector partnerships can strengthen healthcare delivery across Zambia.

The outreach covered a wide range of medical specialties including general surgery, orthopedics, obstetrics, urology, oncology, and pediatric congenital care. According to Upright Africa Founder and CEO Dr. John Woods, the campaign also recorded over 500 patient interactions through consultations, procedures, and follow up care.

In addition to surgeries, the programme provided gynecological procedures, internal medicine consultations, chronic disease management, and pediatric care. Essential medical supplies and theatre materials were also donated to support continued treatment beyond the outreach period.

Ecobank Zambia says the initiative reflects its commitment to creating impact beyond banking. Speaking on behalf of the bank, Head Legal and Company Secretary Ms. Suwilanji Sichalwe Reamsbottom said the partnership demonstrates how businesses can contribute meaningfully to community wellbeing while supporting national development goals.

The Ministry of Health has since welcomed the initiative as a model for future healthcare partnerships aimed at improving access to quality healthcare services across Zambia.
