Lukanga Water unveils $9,325 solar water system

By Derrick Silimina

The Lukanga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited says residents of Chisamba District are expected to benefit from improved and reliable water supply systems worth $9,325 based at the Lukanga Water wellfields.

In a statement, LgWSC Managing Director Nyonge Phiri said the project, implemented by the water utility company in partnership with German water utility firm Gelsenwasser, is aimed at reducing dependence on hydroelectric power, lowering energy costs, and increasing hours of water supply in the district.

“We are witnessing yet another important intervention through the installation of solar energy to supplement hydro power. Chisamba Town serves as a model of what strong partnerships and collaboration can achieve,” Phiri said during the commissioning ceremony.

Phiri described the installation of a solar energy water facility as a major milestone in strengthening water service delivery in Chisamba District.

He disclosed that the project was implemented at a total cost of $9,325.00 and forms part of the long-standing partnership between Lukanga Water and Gelsenwasser which commenced in 2019.

The Managing Director noted that among the notable interventions undertaken through the partnership was the rehabilitation of a leaking 90 cubic metre water storage tank, which significantly reduced non-revenue water losses, improved storage efficiency, and enhanced water supply hours.

“These interventions clearly demonstrate the positive impact that strong and strategic partnerships can have on communities when institutions work together towards a common developmental goal.”

Speaking at the same event, representing the German cooperating partners, Eberhard Oehler of Gelsenwasser expressed gratitude for the strong partnership with Lukanga Water and commended the people of Zambia for prioritizing water issues and safeguarding water infrastructure.

“I urge the residents of Chisamba to continue protecting the infrastructure in order to ensure that it benefits communities for many years to come,” Oehler said
