Airtel Africa makes history with Starling mobile launch

Airtel Africa has made history as the first operator in Africa to commercially launch Starlink Mobile, with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) becoming the first Airtel market to deploy the service.

The new satellite-to-mobile service will allow compatible Airtel customers in areas without conventional network coverage to access SMS and light-data services, including WhatsApp messaging, directly on their smartphones without the need for special equipment or a separate device.

The development could be a game-changer for people living and working in remote areas, including farmers, health workers, humanitarian organisations, transporters, mining operations and communities beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.

The service could also help maintain communication during natural disasters, emergencies and temporary network disruptions, providing a vital link when conventional networks are unavailable.

Airtel says the DRC launch is only the first step, with experience gained from the deployment expected to support a gradual rollout across other Airtel Africa markets, subject to regulatory approvals.

Satellite connectivity is opening a new chapter for Africa’s digital future, with the potential to bring mobile communication to communities previously left beyond the reach of traditional networks.
