President Hakainde Hichilema has announced a significant increase in Zambia’s installed power generation capacity, which has risen from 3,777 megawatts (MW) in 2024 to 4,722.3MW currently.
The President also highlighted strong growth in the country’s solar energy sector. Solar installed capacity has surged from 178MW in 2024 to 1,027.5MW, exceeding the country’s 2026 target of 1,000MW.
President Hichilema made the remarks in a speech delivered on his behalf by Vice President Mutale Nalumango during the 2026 Energy Forum for Africa in Lusaka.
The forum is being held under the theme: “Driving a Borderless Future for Africa.”
The increase in generation capacity marks a major development in Zambia’s efforts to strengthen energy security, expand renewable energy and support economic growth.
