The countdown has begun! This Saturday, 3rd May, the streets of Solwezi will come alive as the Kansanshi Marathon gears up to make history, not just as the biggest sporting spectacle in North Western Province, but as a groundbreaking celebration of inclusivity and international athleticism.
Biggest Turnout Ever – 2,300 Runners Ready to Race
With a staggering 2,300 participants registered—the highest in the event’s history—this year’s marathon is set to cement its place as Zambia’s most anticipated public sporting event.
But it’s not just about numbers; it’s about breaking barriers.
A First for Zambia: Dedicated Races for Athletes with Disabilities
In a bold move towards inclusivity, the Kansanshi Marathon will debut two exclusive race categories for persons with disabilities, setting a new standard for major marathons in Zambia.
A total of 28 para-athletes have signed up, a milestone that organizers say reflects the event’s commitment to accessibility.
“This year’s Kansanshi Marathon is more than a race—it’s a milestone for sport, inclusivity, and community in our province,” declared Eugin Kasempa, Kansanshi Mine’s Community Sports Officer.
“We are proud to welcome athletes from around the world and to champion greater accessibility in competitive events.”
Global Flavour: Runners from 9 Nations to Compete
The marathon’s reputation as an international draw continues to grow, with athletes from Zambia, France, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada, Kenya, DR Congo, the USA, and Zimbabwe lacing up for the challenge.
The diverse lineup underscores the event’s rising prestige on the African running circuit.
Elite Zambian Stars to Watch
All eyes will be on Zambia’s own Elizabeth Mukoloma and Edward Mwale, two of the country’s top long-distance runners, as they tackle the grueling 42-kilometer race.
Both are using the event as a crucial warm-up for next month’s Comrades Marathon in South Africa, adding an extra layer of elite competition to the mix.
More Than Just a Race – A Movement
Beyond the medals and finish lines, the Kansanshi Marathon has become a symbol of unity, health, and the transformative power of sport.
From corporate teams to local school runners, the event brings together people from all walks of life in a shared celebration of endurance and determination.
Mark your calendars—Saturday, 3rd May 2025, will be a day for the history books!
