ZCCM-IH and Sweden’s NIR Partner on ESG to Transform Zambian Mining

Zambia’s state-mining investment arm, ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc (ZCCM-IH), has formalized a strategic ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) partnership with the International Council of Swedish Industry (NIR). This collaboration is backed by the Swedish Embassy in Lusaka and aims to strengthen responsible mining standards across ZCCM-IH’s operations.

The agreement focuses on key pillars: improving ESG governance and reporting, enhancing environmental stewardship, promoting community inclusion, and increasing investor transparency. ZCCM-IH’s CEO, Kakenenwa Muyangwa, described the partnership as a “declaration of shared ambition” to drive Zambia’s mineral wealth toward sustainable growth. The Swedish side, represented by NIR, praised ZCCM-IH’s commitment to ESG and noted that the collaboration will tap into international expertise and best practices.

For Zambia, the ESG deal comes at a pivotal moment: the country is keen to leverage its mining sector not just for revenue but for inclusive development. By aligning with global ESG frameworks, ZCCM-IH hopes to attract more responsible investment, mitigate environmental risks, and build trust with communities living near its mining operations.
