Airtel Networks Zambia Plc has reached a landmark market capitalisation of US$1 billion on the Lusaka Securities Exchange, marking a significant milestone not only for the company but also for Zambia’s capital markets. The achievement, recorded on 8 June 2026, reinforces Airtel Zambia’s position as one of the country’s leading telecommunications and digital financial services providers. The valuation reflects sustained investor confidence in the company’s growth trajectory, operational performance, and ability to capitalize on Zambia’s rapidly expanding digital economy. Airtel is among a select group of companies on the LuSE to attain the billion dollar valuation benchmark, highlighting the growing maturity of Zambia’s stock market.
The milestone comes at a time when Zambia’s telecommunications sector is experiencing strong growth. According to industry data, mobile subscriptions in Zambia increased to 24.5 million by the first half of 2025, representing a penetration rate of 119 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants. Airtel Zambia led subscriber growth among mobile operators, recording a 12.8 percent increase to approximately 11.81 million subscribers and cementing its position as the country’s largest mobile network by subscriber growth. The surge has been driven by rising demand for mobile data, digital platforms, and mobile money services as more Zambians embrace digital solutions for communication, commerce, and financial transactions.
Airtel’s billion dollar valuation also reflects the company’s aggressive investment strategy. The company recently unveiled a US$107 million nationwide network expansion programme, its largest single year infrastructure investment to date, aimed at enhancing network quality, expanding coverage, and strengthening digital connectivity across Zambia. The investment includes hundreds of new network sites and upgrades designed to improve service delivery for consumers and businesses alike.
Commenting on the achievement, Board Chairperson Lynda Mataka said the milestone was a testament to the collective efforts of customers, employees, shareholders, and partners. She noted that the achievement reaffirms Airtel Zambia’s commitment to delivering sustainable value while expanding access to digital connectivity and financial inclusion. Managing Director Hussam Baday added that reaching a US$1 billion market capitalisation reflects the trust stakeholders continue to place in the company and strengthens its commitment to investing in network expansion, digital innovation, and financial inclusion in support of Zambia’s digital transformation agenda.
The milestone also places Airtel Zambia within the broader success story of Airtel Africa, which operates in 14 African countries and serves millions of customers across the continent. In Zambia, Airtel has emerged as a key enabler of digital inclusion through its telecommunications and mobile money services, helping connect individuals, businesses, and communities to the opportunities of the digital economy. As the company celebrates this achievement, it says its focus remains on delivering long term shareholder value, maintaining strong corporate governance standards, and building a resilient digital future for Zambia.
