From Bard to bold: Unicaf champions youth voices in 21st century Shakespeare showcase

In a bold move to bridge classical literature with contemporary youth expression, Unicaf University hosted a vibrant inter-institutional poetry event under the theme “Shakespeare in the 21st Century” on Friday, May 30th, at its Roma campus.

The event, held in collaboration with the youth-driven collective Word Smash Poetry, brought together talented poets from secondary schools and tertiary institutions to reinterpret the timeless works of William Shakespeare in modern, relatable ways. It was an afternoon filled with passion, originality, and powerful commentary on today’s social and civic realities, all filtered through the lens of one of literature’s greatest voices.

As a higher education institution committed to accessible, transformative learning, Unicaf University continues to lead initiatives that go beyond traditional academics. This event showcased its dedication to fostering critical thinking, creative exploration, and community engagement among students and young people.

“Unicaf believes education is not just about books and exams, it’s about creating platforms that empower students to shape the world they live in,” said a university representative. “This collaboration is a reflection of our mission to make education both meaningful and socially impactful.”

Founded by young creatives, Word Smash Poetry uses the arts as a vehicle for dialogue, self-expression, and civic awareness. Their partnership with Unicaf University created an ideal synergy, combining the rigor of academia with the raw, expressive energy of Zambia’s youth.

Jerry Sikazwe, a co-founder of Word Smash, emphasized the broader purpose of the initiative:

“We want young people to have a voice that can influence policy and bring attention to the issues that matter. Joining forces with institutions like Unicaf helps amplify that voice.”
