Hichilema calls for stronger regional mining value chains

President Hakainde Hichilema has called for stronger regional cooperation, increased local participation and greater investment in mineral exploration to ensure that Africa’s mineral wealth delivers meaningful economic benefits to its people.

The President made the call when he officially opened the Third Zambia Mining and Investment Insaka in Lusaka, where he emphasised the need for African countries to move beyond exporting raw minerals and focus on value addition, local manufacturing and mineral processing.

President Hichilema said developing regional value chains would create jobs, stimulate economic growth and open up more opportunities for local businesses and suppliers to participate in the mining industry.

He stressed that government and the private sector must work together to improve the business environment, attract investment and strengthen the capacity of local suppliers to support mining operations.

The Head of State also highlighted the importance of investing in mineral exploration, reliable energy supply and water infrastructure, noting that these were critical to sustainable mining and industrial development.

He said African countries needed to strengthen regional partnerships and promote value addition to ensure that the benefits of mining reached citizens and communities surrounding mining operations.

President Hichilema further called for stronger dialogue between government and industry players, urging stakeholders to translate discussions into practical measures that address challenges in the sector and promote investment.

The five-day Insaka, running from October 19 to 23, 2026, has brought together government officials, mining companies, investors and other stakeholders to explore ways of strengthening Africa’s mining industry.

Held under the theme, “Transforming Africa’s Mining Landscape: Regional Value Chains, Shared Prosperity and Empowering Communities,” the gathering is expected to provide a platform for discussions on regional cooperation, local participation and sustainable growth in the mining sector.
