The much-anticipated Kansanshi Marathon 2025 made history this morning as it officially began at Trident College in Solwezi, with a staggering 2,300 participants—making it the largest public sporting event ever held in Zambia’s North Western Province.

Enthusiastic runners and spectators gathered as early as 04:00 hours, filling the starting point with excitement and energy.

The marathon, embraced by people of all ages, has solidified its reputation as a unifying force in the region.

A Marathon of Firsts

This year’s edition is particularly groundbreaking, not only for its record turnout but also for its commitment to inclusivity.

For the first time, the Kansanshi Marathon has introduced two dedicated race categories for persons with disabilities—a pioneering move among major Zambian marathons.

A total of 28 para-athletes have registered, marking a major stride toward inclusive sports in Zambia.

Global Participation and Elite Competition

The event has also drawn international attention, with runners from nine countries, including Zambia, France, the UK, South Africa, Canada, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the U.S., and Zimbabwe.

This diverse lineup highlights the marathon’s growing prestige on the global stage.

All eyes are on Zambian long-distance stars Elizabeth Mukoloma and Edward Mwale, who are competing in the 42-kilometer race as part of their preparation for next month’s Comrades Marathon in South Africa.

As the race unfolds, the Kansanshi Marathon continues to cement its status as a premier athletic and community event in Zambia, promoting health, unity, and the transformative power of sport.

The marathon is still underway, with winners expected to be announced later today.
