Kansanshi Cycling Team to Fly Zambia’s Flag at 2026 ABSA Cape Epic

Four elite cyclists from the Kansanshi Cycling Team are set to represent Zambia at the 2026 ABSA Cape Epic, one of the world’s most prestigious mountain bike stage races, scheduled for 15–22 March 2026 in the Western Cape, South Africa.

The announcement was made in Solwezi during a media briefing by Kansanshi Mining PLC Assistant General Manager, Axel Kottgen, who described the team’s qualification for the global event as a historic milestone for Zambian cycling.

Mr. Kottgen said the achievement reflects Kansanshi Mining PLC’s continued investment in sport development, youth empowerment and community advancement, while positioning Zambia on the international sporting stage.

The ABSA Cape Epic is widely regarded as the ultimate test of mountain biking, drawing top professional and amateur cyclists from across the world. The eight-day race is contested in two-person teams and is known for its extreme terrain, technical trails and unpredictable weather, demanding high levels of endurance, skill and teamwork.

Kansanshi Mining PLC Corporate Affairs Superintendent Ryan Ellis said securing Zambia’s participation required months of intense preparation and a highly competitive selection process.

“After rigorous training sessions and demanding trials, the team was narrowed down to four riders selected for their exceptional performance, stamina and ability to compete under extreme conditions,” Mr. Ellis said.

The Zambian contingent will compete in two teams: Copper Kings 1, comprising Matthews Mazabuka and national cycling champion Davies Kawemba; and Copper Kings 2, made up of former national champion Levy Pyele and Ernest Mazabuka.

ABSA Solwezi Branch Manager Lesigo Shalala Chisala, representing one of the event sponsors, said the sponsorship will ensure the athletes are professionally supported and gain international exposure, while strengthening Zambia’s competitive presence at the world-renowned race.

The 2026 participation marks a significant step forward for competitive cycling in Zambia, with expectations that the team’s presence at the Cape Epic will inspire upcoming cyclists and elevate the country’s profile in international mountain biking.
