India Reopens Zambia Talks as Global Mineral Competition Intensifies

India is renewing its interest in Zambia’s copper and critical minerals, reopening discussions that could deepen commercial ties between the two countries at a time when competition for strategic mineral resources is intensifying globally.
For Zambia, the renewed engagement comes as the country seeks to attract investment into its mining sector while increasing copper production and positioning itself as an important supplier of minerals needed for the energy transition and advanced technologies.

The timing is significant for India, which is seeking to secure reliable supplies of critical minerals as demand for copper, battery materials and other strategic resources grows. Zambia offers an attractive opportunity because of its established copper industry and broader mineral potential.

Indian companies have historically had a significant presence in Zambia, particularly in mining, and renewed discussions could create opportunities for investment, offtake agreements, processing and other forms of cooperation across the mining value chain. India is also strengthening critical minerals partnerships elsewhere, including with Belgium, demonstrating the growing importance of securing diversified supplies.

For Zambia, the bigger opportunity is to convert renewed international interest into investment that creates greater value locally. As competition among India, China, the United States and other major economies for critical minerals increases, Zambia has more leverage to negotiate partnerships that go beyond exporting raw copper and minerals.

The country is already pursuing greater value addition and investment in mining and processing, and India’s renewed interest could add another important player to that equation. With copper at the centre of Zambia’s economic ambitions, the return of India to the negotiating table signals how strategically valuable the country’s mineral resources have become.
