Forty Lusaka-based journalists attending the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) Media Training Workshop on Taxation and Business Reporting have explored the importance of financial journalism in understanding Zambia’s economy.
Bronwyn Nielsen, former Editor-in-Chief of CNBC Africa, delivered a presentation titled “Following the Kwacha,” highlighting the need for journalists to look beyond financial headlines and examine what economic figures mean for businesses, households and the wider economy.
The session emphasised the importance of following financial flows to improve reporting on taxation, public revenue and economic decision-making.
By interpreting financial data and asking critical questions about economic performance, journalists can help audiences better understand how tax policies and revenue collection affect everyday life and business operations.
The figure K83.9 billion also highlights a key financial reference point in the workshop material, although further context is needed to establish what it represents.
The ZRA Media Training Workshop aims to strengthen journalists’ capacity to interpret financial information, verify claims and explain complex tax issues in clear, accessible language.
Through engagements with experienced media professionals, the Authority seeks to promote informed public debate and independent scrutiny of taxation and business performance in Zambia.
The initiative underscores the role of accurate, data-driven journalism in improving public understanding of tax administration, economic trends and national revenue.
