First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has invested a further K5.7 million to expand emergency care at Trident Mine Hospital, shortly after handing over the K18.7 million Wumi Mini Hospital in Kalumbila to the government.

The Trident expansion features a dedicated resuscitation room and a four-bed Emergency Department, equipped to handle more complex and critical cases in the remote mining area.

FQM General Manager Scott Whitehead said at the official opening that the investment was necessary as Trident grows, with the hospital serving about 17,000 people annually and recording more than 40,000 consultations.

He said stronger healthcare infrastructure was essential as Zambia pushes towards three million tonnes of annual copper production, adding that the people driving that growth must remain a priority.

“This investment represents a practical commitment to the health, safety and wellbeing of our people, and to the resilience of our operation,” Whitehead said.

The upgraded facility is expected to benefit employees, contractors, families and members of the wider community as economic activity and population continue to expand around Kalumbila.

FQM Manager Corporate Health and Wellness Kylie van Der Merwe said every design choice was made with one objective saving lives when every second counts.
