As Saturday approaches, an unmistakable buzz sweeps through the lush forest of Kalumbila as the long-awaited Kalumbila Challenge is yet again about to transform the district into a hive of high energy and eager anticipation.

More than just a test of endurance, the Kalumbila Challenge has grown into the heart of the community as athletes yearn to push their physical limits, while families and spectators gather to cheer, connect, and soak in the festive atmosphere.

From fitness enthusiasts chasing personal bests to locals coming together to honor the region’s rich heritage, the event stands as a vibrant celebration of wellness, togetherness, and pure community spirit.

The 2026 edition of the Kalumbila Challenge – organized by FQM Trident Limited, a subsidiary of the First Quantum Minerals (FQM) will take place on Saturday, September 5, at Sentinel School grounds in Kalumbila District.

According to the organisers, the annual sports event has experienced significant growth, drawing over 2,500 participants from across Zambia in 2025, and the 2026 edition is expected to attract more than 3,000 participants, a trend indicating that the event is rapidly becoming one of the most anticipated community gatherings in the region.

This year’s Kalumbila Challenge is set to be an exciting event that will highlight stamina, determination, and community spirit by attracting participants and enthusiasts nationwide. The competition will include a diverse range of athletic events suitable for all ages and abilities, such as Running (5KM and 10KM), Cycling (25KM and 50KM), Football, Chess, and a special category for persons with disabilities to promote accessibility and inclusivity.

The atmosphere is electric, as some participants are seemingly encouraged and diligently geared up to conquer not only sporting excellence but also health awareness, strengthen community bonds, and celebrate a shared cultural consciousness.

As the race rages on, the buzz around the event continues to grow from strength to strength.

Registration is in progress for individuals, schools, sports clubs, and corporate teams, with participants gathering at Sentinel School to receive official race bibs, T-shirts, and this influx of participants indicates strong engagement and community interest in the event.

“I am super excited and can’t wait to take part in this year’s Kalumbila Challenge. Yeah, I enjoy cycling a lot and I am geared to take part in the fascinating 50km cycling race,” said Andrew Chalwe, a cycling fanatic from one of the mining contractors.
