Zambia steps up efforts to strengthen mineral traceability and curb illegal mining

Zambia is intensifying efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability and responsible mineral trade through the implementation of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) Regional Certification Mechanism (RCM).

A four-day working session currently underway in Lusaka is focusing on identifying implementation gaps and developing a clear roadmap towards the introduction of the ICGLR Certificate for tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold (3TG minerals).

The initiative is aimed at improving mineral traceability, promoting responsible sourcing and preventing the illegal exploitation and trade of the country’s natural resources.

ICGLR Director of Democracy and Good Governance, Dr. Emmanuel Makumba Mali, underscored the importance of the certification mechanism, noting that it would enhance transparency, strengthen investor confidence and improve Government oversight of mineral trade.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Director of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining, Mr. Brighton Kateka, emphasised the need for stronger collaboration among key institutions, alongside clearly defined implementation timelines to ensure the successful rollout of the mechanism.

Speaking during the meeting yesterday, PDU Delivery Manager – Enhanced Value Chains, Mr. Jones Mulunga Shimbela, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting coordination, monitoring and tracking of agreed actions to accelerate implementation.

He noted that the initiative would contribute towards improving mineral sector governance, enhancing revenue collection and advancing the Government’s Grow Zambia Agenda.

The implementation of the ICGLR Regional Certification Mechanism is expected to mark an important step towards building a more transparent, accountable and responsible mineral supply chain, while strengthening Zambia’s position in the regional and international minerals market.
