In a landmark show of international solidarity and strategic economic cooperation, the Czech Republic has pledged a significant donation of K7.2 million to Zambia’s mining sector, aimed specifically at strengthening the country’s geoscientific capacity through advanced geological survey equipment.
The announcement was made during a high-level courtesy visit by Czech Deputy Prime Minister Marian Jurečka to Zambia’s Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, at his office in Lusaka.
This gesture marks a new chapter in the longstanding partnership between the two nations, rooted in decades of cooperation dating back to the early years of Zambia’s independence.
Deputy Prime Minister Jurečka emphasized his government’s commitment to helping Zambia fulfil its mining ambitions:
“We want to help you reach your mining goals and fulfil your priorities,” he said. “The Czech Republic has a lot of expertise in mining, both surface and deep, and our companies would like to cooperate not only with the Ministry of Mines but also with Zambia’s private sector.”
According to Minister Kabuswe, the donation aligns perfectly with Zambia’s broader national development strategy, which aims to attract sustainable investment in the mining sector by improving the country’s geological database.
“This donation will enable us to improve our geological survey capabilities, which in turn will attract more investment and strengthen policy development in the mining sector,” said Kabuswe. “We are grateful to the Czech government for this vital support.”
A Strategic Step for Investment and Reform
The donation comes at a critical time, as Zambia intensifies its mining sector reforms to boost transparency, efficiency, and investor confidence.
Kabuswe reiterated that government has introduced comprehensive regulatory and structural reforms, including the establishment of the Minerals Regulation Commission, to enhance governance and predictability in the industry.
“The reforms are designed to create an investor-friendly environment and protect both domestic and foreign interests in Zambia’s mineral wealth,” he stated.
Beyond equipment donations, the Minister highlighted Zambia’s openness to deeper Czech involvement in exploration, mining technology, and value addition projects.
With a rich array of mineral resources including copper, cobalt, lithium, and rare earth elements, Zambia presents fertile ground for Czech investors.
Shared History, Shared Goals
The Czech Republic and Zambia share a deep-rooted history of cooperation, from Czechoslovakia’s support during Zambia’s liberation struggle to welcoming Zambian students into its universities.
This legacy now finds expression in new economic initiatives.
Minister Kabuswe expressed appreciation for Czechia’s recognition of Zambia as a priority country for development cooperation, noting the Czech government’s €3 million annual support pledge running through 2030.
He also applauded the European nation’s timely humanitarian aid during Zambia’s recent drought crisis.
“The relationship between our countries is built on mutual respect and shared aspirations for inclusive and sustainable development,” said Kabuswe.
Path Forward: Deeper Engagement and Collaboration
Deputy Prime Minister Jurečka indicated that Czech businesses are eager to expand their presence in Zambia and are already building relationships on the ground.
“We want to intensify cooperation in mining, quality, and excellence. Czech companies are ready to engage in joint ventures, technology transfer, and sustainable mining practices that meet global environmental and social governance (ESG) standards,” he said.
Both leaders hinted at plans to formalize the collaboration through a memorandum of understanding that will guide the donation of geological survey equipment and broader technical and trade cooperation.
Kabuswe proposed the establishment of joint ventures and technical assistance programs, especially in artisanal and small-scale mining, to promote formalization and sustainability in the sector.
A Partnership Forged in Purpose
As Zambia’s mining sector eyes a new era of growth, driven by diversification and technological advancement, partnerships like that with Czechia are becoming crucial pillars of progress.
“We look forward to continuous dialogue and cooperation with the Czech Republic in mining, technology, and industrial development,” Kabuswe said.
The Czech Republic’s donation is more than financial support—it is a strategic investment in Zambia’s economic future and a powerful symbol of international trust in the country’s mining renaissance.
