President Hichilema officially reopens Mulungushi Textiles

This morning, President Hakainde Hichilema officially commissioned the Zambia–China Mulungushi Textiles factory in Kabwe, marking the reopening of the facility after nearly two decades of inactivity.

 

The revival of this key industrial plant signals a major step towards Zambia’s industrialisation agenda and economic recovery.

 

Here are key Highlights from the Event:

 

President Hakainde Hichilema has officially reopened Mulungushi textiles in Kabwe Central Province, a joint venture between Zambia and China.

 

US$140 million has been pumped into the re-opening of the plant and the facility will create over 500 direct jobs and empower over 2, 500 cotton farmers across Zambia.

 

Described the reopening as a fulfilment of a long-standing commitment, emphasizing its significance in creating employment opportunities and empowering local communities.

 

The facility is expected to manufacture a range of products, including cotton fabrics, chitenge materials, curtains, and other textile goods, contributing to the growth of the local value chain.

 

Encouraged the promotion of local industries through deliberate policies that prioritise locally produced goods over imports where possible, in order to strengthen domestic production and support Zambian businesses.

 

He called on citizens and stakeholders to actively partner with Government in driving the development of Kabwe and the country at large, highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in national growth.

 

President Hichilema underscored the significance of the project, stating that the revival of Mulungushi Textiles represents not just the return of a factory, but the restoration of livelihoods, industry and national pride.
